Anxiety
Fear and anxiety are a part of life. You may feel anxious before you take a test or walk down a dark street. This kind of anxiety is useful – it can make you more alert or careful and it usually ends soon after you are out of the situation that caused it. For some, the anxiety does not go away and gets worse over time. They may have chest pains or nightmares. They may even be afraid to leave home. These are the symptoms of anxiety disorders.
Depression
Depression is very different from the occasional blues. It is a serious medical illness that involves the brain. Depression has physical and emotional symptoms that cannot be wished away. There are different types of depressive disorders, each with its own symptoms and treatment options. The good news is that depression can be treated and people can recover. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, please know that you are not alone.
Stress
Stress can wreak havoc on your college life. Let’s face it, you’ve got a lot to juggle with course assignments, exams, work, finances, relationships, and family. Too much stress – or not being able to adapt to stressful situations – can make you sick, unhappy, and unproductive. The news gets worse: Stress worsens other illnesses. It can heighten your response to pain, trigger asthma attacks and increase gastrointestinal stomach problems.
Body Image
We all have our days when we feel awkward or uncomfortable in our bodies. The key to developing positive body image is to recognize and respect our natural shape and learn to overpower those negative thoughts and feelings with positive, affirming and accepting ones.
