BIOGRAPHY:
Richard Newton, PhD is currently serving as an irregular warfare and airpower planner for Special Operations Command Europe. He is a retired USAF special operations and combat rescue helicopter pilot, combat aviation advisor, strategic planner, and educator. Between 2001 and 2023 he served on the faculty and as a researcher and author at Joint Special Operations University. He has also served as visiting faculty at the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies.

In addition to the GNSI, “Newt” volunteers his time as the Managing Editor for and occasional contributor to the Air Commando Journal, as a Senior Fellow at the Homeland Defense Institute, and as the Director of Project Air and Space Power at the Irregular Warfare Initiative. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the USAF Academy and a master’s degree from the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies. Dr Newton holds a PhD in defence studies from King’s College London.
