There’s no question that the past several years have had an incredible impact on the mental health and well-being of the more than 160 million people in the U.S. workforce. Major events – from the pandemic to social unrest and now financial uncertainty – have taken their toll on our communities. Now, more than ever before, it is critical that we build healthy organizational cultures to protect our teams’ well-being, but also recognize the impact mental and behavioral health issues can have on a company's bottom line.

Every year businesses lose billions of dollars due to mental and behavioral health issues experienced by members of their workforce or their family members. These financial losses can be attributed to absenteeism, a decrease in productivity, and medical claims. In addition, there are considerable reputational repercussions due to high employee turnover, job dissatisfaction, and poor morale. Identifying workers at all levels of an organization with mental or behavioral health issues and securing assistance for them is essential.

The Mental Health and Wellness in the Workplace course developed by the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences at the ßÙßÇÂþ»­, in conjunction with the , will teach participants about the prevalence rates and symptoms of the most common mental and behavioral disorders, what to look for in employee behaviors that may suggest an impairment, how to approach the employee, and what resources you should consider to help your employees as well as attract and retain top talent. In addition, a focus will be placed on wellness in the workplace. Questions such as the following will be addressed: What does a healthy workplace look like? How can employers foster such an environment? What can employees do while at work to manage stress and anxiety as well as improve focus and productivity?

This is a seven-session (two hours per session), non-credit, online course that is broken into segments lasting between 15 and 60 minutes. The asynchronous format allows the course to be accessible for those who have busy or non-traditional schedules.

It’s important to note that this is not just for employers; employees who take the course can sharpen their skills in identifying colleagues who may be in distress and offer assistance. In fact, it could be argued that colleagues are more likely to understand the personal lives of their peers and notice behavioral changes more quickly.
