Doctor of Philosophy
The Ph.D. program in Curriculum Instruction with a concentration in Counselor Education is designed for masters-level counselors interested in pursuing a degree that focuses on developing advanced research skills, clinical supervision skills, and teaching practice. The doctoral major emphasizes research as opposed to clinical skill development and is designed primarily for students who wish to advance to a career in an academic institution.
The CACREP-aligned program consists of a minimum of 59 credit hours of blended coursework (online, hybrid, and in-person) in core counselor education, research, a student-selected cognate, and dissertation hours. This selective and intensive program can be completed in 2.5-3 years of full-time study. The program enrolls up to 5-7 incoming students each year. Applications are due by February 14, and Interviews typically occur in mid-March.
ADMISSION INFORMATION
- A master’s degree from an accredited university in counseling or a closely related professional field
- Current Resume or Vita outlining relevant counseling experience, education, work/teaching experience, publications, presentations, etc.
- Applicants must have a minimum GRE verbal score of 153, a math score of 146, and an
Analytic Writing score of 4.
- In the event of a lower GRE score, on rare occasions, a combination of other factors may allow for provisional acceptance.
- Three References from individuals who can testify to either your academic or professional abilities and potential for success in a doctoral program.
- A personal statement and interview with the program faculty, writing samples, and work references upon request.
