Empowering Teachers to Center Students: A Recap of the "Sage on the Side" Workshop at the David C. Anchin Center
In a bid to foster student-centered learning environments, K-12 teachers gathered for a transformative workshop titled "Sage on the Side: Methods and Practices for Teachers that Bring Students to the Center." Held at TECO Hall in the David C. Anchin Centr at the USF College of Education, the workshop spanned two sessions on Monday, October 30, 2023, and Thursday, November 9, 2023.
Facilitated by Dr. Don Baeszler, the workshop focused on the "Sage on the Side" teaching method, an approach that positions the teacher as a guide rather than a lecturer, emphasizing student mastery of the curriculum. The goal is to shift the classroom dynamic, placing students at the forefront of their learning journey with teachers serving as resident experts and facilitators.
This initiative proved to be an invaluable opportunity for K-12 educators, including interns, cooperating teachers, new educators, and mentees. The workshop provided a collaborative space for professional growth, enabling participants to share insights, strategies, and challenges related to implementing student-centered practices.
Throughout the sessions, attendees engaged in lively discussions, exchanging ideas for addressing problems of practice, and sharing experiences from their unique teaching contexts. The interactive nature of the workshop allowed educators to glean insights into effective methodologies for centering student voice, enhancing engagement, and fostering productivity in the classroom.
The diverse group of participants, ranging from seasoned educators to those newer to the profession, found common ground in their dedication to refining their teaching approaches. The workshop facilitated a dynamic exchange of perspectives, creating a supportive community where educators could learn from each other's successes and challenges.
