Education for Justice: 2nd Annual Anchin Conference
October 15-17, 2021
In October, the Anchin Center welcomed nearly 100 PreK-12 teachers, administrators
and higher education faculty members to USF鈥檚 Tampa campus for the second annual Education
for Justice Conference.
In the context of an ongoing global pandemic that has highlighted so many longstanding
inequalities that serve as barriers to academic achievement in schools,
the conference focused on accelerating learning for students who have experienced
learning loss, teachers鈥� well-being and emotional health, teacher recruitment and
retention, primary and secondary trauma, and the health and safety of everyone in
our schools.
The conference was anchored by four renowned keynote speakers, including:
- Vanderbilt University鈥檚 Dr. H. Richard Milner IV, who kicked off the conference with a keynote focused on ending the school-to-prison pipeline through opportunity centered practices.
- Dr. Jeff Duncan-Andrade, Professor of Latina/o Studies and Race and Resistance Studies at San Francisco State University, who spoke about the difference between equality and equity in educational contexts.
- Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown of Stetson University, who closed the day on Saturday with a keynote presentation about the need to prioritize teacher wellness when advancing equity work in education.
- University of Georgia鈥檚 Dr. Bettina L. Love, who spoke to a virtual audience on Sunday morning, offered a closing all-conference keynote that celebrated Black joy and brilliance in educational spaces.
In addition to the keynote presentation, a series of breakout sessions on Saturday and Sunday were led by practicing K-12 teachers, leaders and higher education faculty.
