Exploring Teaching and Learning

Overview

Join us in Exploring Teaching and Learning (ETL), a unique opportunity to connect and build strategies that increase learning and success with your students. We recognize that instructors are short on time and need practical approaches that they can take into their teaching right away. So, CITL has partnered with , a platform connecting faculty across higher education with tools and ideas to support learning. OneHE works with experts in teaching and learning from across the globe to provide practical and engaging microlearning – 20 minutes at a time – that will help faculty to better engage students to maximize their success. 

Thus, over the next year participants will:

  • Engage with the resources and tools that interest you through OneHE
  • Connect with faculty across USF and around the globe
  • Implement practical approaches and strategies through CITL events

You will gain access to courses, materials, and both USF and global community of scholars, participate in USF CITL community space for local engagement and embark on CITL Adventures – specifically designed development experiences. This is a valuable opportunity that promises to transform your teaching approach and create a positive impact on your students' learning journey. 


Fall 2024

In addition to the wealth of resources provided through OneHE, CITL has developed specific learning adventures that our CITL Explorers can engage with. These adventures include curated set of courses as well as offer opportunities to connect and examine how best to implement these within your individual context (see below for details).

Next Steps:  Space is limited, so please share your interest in joining  by completing the application form by September 13.  And since learning is always more fun together, we encourage you to invite a colleague from your department to join in. Participants will be notified of their selection.

CITL Learning Adventure Overview 

Below is a brief description of the Fall '24 Adventures:

  • All Adventures will begin once activated
  • We have 4 distinct Learning Adventure opportunities
    • 2 Adventures will include synchronous sessions and designated as Golden Badges
    • 2 Adventures will be completely asynchronous and designated as Silver Badges
    • Complete one or more adventures each semester

CITL Fall 2024 Learning Adventures

Adventure 1: Strengthening Foundations - Golden Badge 

To be awarded this ‘Golden Badge’, you must complete the requirements below

  1. Complete the 6 listed courses.
    1. Course Development Made Clear  (Chris Hakala) (20 minutes)
    2. Helping Students Learn How to Learn (Todd Zakrajsek) (20 minutes)
    3. Classroom Practice: Active Learning (Derek Bruff) (20 minutes)
    4. Classroom Practice: Engaged Lecturing (Todd Zakrajsek) (20 minutes)
    5. Creating Universally Designed Assessments (Kevin Merry) (20 minutes)
    6. Supporting Students’ Use of Feedback (Naomi Winstone) (20 minutes)

  2. Attend three monthly live discussion meetings via MS Teams. Sessions will explore the courses in greater detail and focus on implementing strategies. We will meet every third Tuesday of the month.
    1. The first session is on Sept. 17, 2-3 pm
    2. The second session is on Oct. 15, 2-3 pm
    3. The last meeting is on Nov. 19, 2-3 pm.

  3. Complete the above requirements by Friday Dec. 6, 2024

Optional:  

  • Engage in the CITL community discussion thread titled: ‘Strengthening Foundations‘.

Adventure 2: Small Tweaks, Large Impact – Golden Badge 

To be awarded this ‘Golden Badge’, you must complete the requirements below

  1. Complete the 6 listed courses.
    1. Small Teaching: Retrieval (James M. Lang) (20 minutes)
    2. Small Teaching: Predicting (Todd Zakrajsek, James M. Lang) (20 minutes)
    3. Small Teaching: Interleaving (Todd Zakrajsek, James M. Lang) (20 minutes)
    4. Small Teaching: Self-Explaining (Derek Bruff, James M. Lang) (20 minutes)
    5. Small Teaching: Learning Through Practicing (Flower Darby, James M. Lang) (20 minutes)
    6. Small Teaching: Learning through Connecting (Flower Darby, James M. Lang) (20 minutes)

  2. Attend three monthly live discussion meetings via MS Teams. Sessions will explore the courses in greater detail and focus on implementing strategies. We will meet every third Wednesday of the month.
    1. The first session is on Sept. 18, 11 am -12 pm
    2. The second session is on Oct. 16, 11 am – 12 pm
    3. The last meeting is on Nov. 20, 11 am – 12 pm.

Adventure 3: Moving Forward (no synchronous meetings) - Silver Badge 

To be awarded this ‘Silver Badge’, you must complete the requirements below

  1. Complete the 6 listed items.

    2. Applying the Science of Motivation to Teaching (Sarah Rose Cavanagh) (20 minutes)
    3. Increasing Student Persistence by Working with Emotions (Martha K. Diede) (20 minutes)
    4. Mid-Semester Feedback: 5 A Method (Niya Bond) (6-min. Presentation)
    5. Fostering Critical Thinking in Discussions  (Fufy Demissie) (20 minutes)
    6. Developing A Growth Mindset Among Your Students (Steve Joordens) (20 minutes)

  2. Engage in the CITL community discussion thread titled ‘Moving Forward‘.

  3. Complete the above requirements by Friday Dec. 6, 2024

Learning Adventure 4: Choose Your Own Courses (a la carte) - (no synchronous meetings)-   Silver Badge

To be awarded this ‘Silver Badge’, you must complete the requirements below.

  1. Complete six OneHE courses of your choice.
  2. Engage in the CITL community discussion thread titled ‘Choose Your Own Adventure‘ and share your reflections, tips, and recommendations.
  3. Complete the above requirements by Friday Dec. 6, 2024.
