School of Art & Art History

USF College of Design, Art & Performance

Kennedy Family Artist and Scholar

The program was established in 2009 due to a generous gift by the Kennedy family for an Endowed Artist and Scholar Residency in the ßÙßÇÂþ» School of Art and & Art History.

Each year, with input from students and faculty, a recognized professional is invited for up to one semester to develop groundbreaking interdisciplinary projects and to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. During their visit, these eminent arts professionals develop creative solutions to challenging issues of contemporary society and act as catalysts for formal outreach within the institution and beyond, in the diverse cultures of the Tampa Bay communities.

In addition to the Kennedy Family Artist and Scholars in Residence, the school brings notable and emerging artists, scholars and arts professionals to campus for brief visits, often including community outreach endeavors. Visit the Kennedy Visiting Artists and Scholars page to see guests we have invited in past semesters.

The 2019-2020 Kennedy Family Artist In Residence, Hope Ginsburg, will give a lecture on Cultivating Resilience. Her work addresses critical social and environmental issues. The USF Contemporary Art Museum received a $35,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant to support her exhibition "Sponge Exchange," coming to USF in 2020.

Hope Ginsberg is an artist and Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Ginsburg received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and MS in Visual Studies from MIT. Her interdisciplinary projects are invested in the socially transformative potential of knowledge exchange and build community around learning. Ginsburg’s work is driven by a curiosity about the natural world, its materials and the species with which we share the planet. Her on-going projects are collaborative, cooperative, and participatory, often organized around live experiences for those directly involved, resulting in visual representations, objects, photography and videos. Ginsburg has exhibited at museums nationally and internationally, at venues including MoMA PS1, MASS MoCA, Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU, Wexner Center for the Arts, Kunst-Werke Berlin, Contemporary Art Center Vilnius, Baltimore Museum of Art, SculptureCenter, and the Mercosul Biennial in Brazil. She is the recipient of an Art Matters Foundation Grant and a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship and has attended residencies such as the Robert Rauschenberg Residency, Skowhegan, the Wexner Film/Video Studio, and The Harbor at Beta Local. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Hyperallergic, and Artforum.
