bio

My current research examines fees and fines in rental housing, an overlooked but impactful class of housing costs.  By documenting fees and fines, and their patterning and distribution, I hope to contribute to the ongoing research conversation about the experiences of low- and moderate income tenants in unregulated rental housing markets—and how those experiences can reproduce poverty and cause downward mobility.  Another research project examines the conditions for grassroots organizing in distressed neighborhoods of U.S. cities, and how these conditions have been shaped by generations of public policy, economic restructuring, and philanthropy.  My primary professional passion is in the classroom, where I teach an introductory course on American politics, and electives on American political thought, urban politics, the presidency, and social movements.
