About
Mission and Vision
Welcome
The School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies embraces a vision of global studies
that is broadly interdisciplinary and transcends traditional geographical boundaries
of political and social communities. Faculty in SIGS define our school’s focus as
Citizenship, Justice, and Identity in a Global Context. We feel that this construction accurately captures the elements of race and ethnicity
that are vital to our Africana Studies programs, as well as Political Science and
International Studies programs. Citizenship captures the many forms of inquiry related to relationships between individuals and
political communities and various forms of political authority operative at different
spatial scales—while not excluding the study of novel phenomena of post-national identity,
dual citizenship, “flexible citizenship,” etc. Justice calls attention to the normative elements that inform much of our research, from
social movements to civil rights to generational justice to human rights and the prevention
of genocide. The Global Context portion of our formulation draw attention to the global scale of much of our research
and recognizes our commitment to understanding traditionally circumscribed fields
such as American Politics and State & Local Politics in a broader fashion.
