About
Mission and Vision
Welcome
The School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies (SIGS) promulgates a vision of global studies that is broadly interdisciplinary and transcends traditional geographical definitions. SIGS brings together the disciplines of Africana Studies, International Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, and International Affairs studies to foster an understanding of the world. Our interpretation of global studies includes a commitment to recognizing the linkages between our diverse local community and the world. We are situating USF, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, and Florida into the global context. Because of this, we recognize that it is of primary importance to commit ourselves to promote diversity, both within the unit and in what we offer to students, the local community, and our respective scholarly communities.
Individual SIGS faculty members have produced impactful scholarship in the form of books, journal articles, and chapters in edited volumes. In addition to the achievements of our individual faculty members, SIGS as a unit has carved out an emerging niche in key areas of social inquiry. Specifically, SIGS is uniquely situated to offer the following areas of research and scholarship:
- Civic Engagement and Social Movements
- Comparative Studies
- Global Justice (human rights, genocide, environmental justice, global governance, international law, and economic justice)
- Intersections of Race, Ethnicity, Class, and Gender
- Migration and Diasporic Studies
- Political Agency, Identity, and Community
While this list identifies SIGS's key areas of strengths that overlap among many faculty members, it is of course not exhaustive; there are faculty members who generate high-quality research in other areas, and SIGS values their contributions as much as everyone else's.
