BIO

Dr. Gil Ben-Herut is Professor in the Religious Studies Department, ßÙßÇÂþ»­. His research interests include premodern religious literature in the Kannada language, South Asian bhakti (devotional) traditions, translation in South Asia, and programming in Digital Humanities.

Awards

In 2023, Dr. Ben-Herut was awarded the Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award and the Senior Short Term Research Grant of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) for his current project "A History of Speaking: Poetry, Orality, and Authority in Kannada Devotional Literature."

In 2020, he was awarded the Faculty Outstanding Research Achievement Award of the ßÙßÇÂþ»­, the 2020 Best Book Award, Southeastern Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (SEC/AAS), and the Digital Scholarship Grant by the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS).

In 2019, he received the Award for Best First Book of the Southeastern Medieval Association (SEMA) and the Carnegie-Whitney Grant of the American Library Association (ALA).   

In 2018 he was awarded the Collaborative International Research Grant of the American Academy of Religion (AAR).
