Visibility & Remembrance: Standing with the Trans* Community illustration

VISIBILITY & REMEMBRANCE: STANDING WITH THE TRANS* COMMUNITY ART SHOW

Visibility & Remembrance: Standing with the Trans* Community is an international art exhibit hosted by the USF Department of Women's & Gender Studies that centers trans* people as it invites artists to create and submit work that stands in solidarity with the trans* community.

The exhibit celebrates and makes trans* people’s experiences more visible as we seek to combat their exclusion and erasure from various aspects of society, while we also remember the courage and resilience members of the trans* community have shown in the face of various institutions and systems of oppression. Visibility & Remembrance asks artists to reflect on the experiences, representations, identities, and/or politics of being trans*.

The thirty-two artists selected for the exhibit reflect a diversity of perspectives and experiences from nine countries – Canada, France, Germany, India, Nigeria, Poland, Switzerland, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Their work includes two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, film, and poetry.

Throughout the duration of the exhibit, WGS will host a number of virtual lectures and events, including a lecture by Kalki Subramaniam on art as activism on January 18, 2022 (co-sponsored by the School of Art and Art History, Department of Sociology, and Office of Multicultural Affairs); a conversation with Dr. Katrina Karkazis and Roc Rochon on decolonizing sport on February 8, 2022 (funded by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council); a lecture and conversation with Dr. Marquis Bey on the convergence of blackness, transness, and black feminism via the Black Radical Tradition on February 24, 2022 (funded by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council); and a lecture by Dr. David A. Rubin (USF) in March, 2022.

The exhibit runs from November 17, 2021 to April 1, 2022; these dates were chosen to honor two annual international events – Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20) and Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31).

The exhibit can be viewed in-person at USF and online in the .
