Walking is good for your health and the environment. Pedestrians, however, are among the most vulnerable users of roadways. On average, 430 people are treated in emergency departments every 24 hours, with one pedestrian dying every two hours from injuries suffered. Safety is a shared responsibility for all road users. It's important to understand the risks and learn how to stay safe when heading out on foot.
Tips
- Always cross at marked crosswalks.
- Follow the "walk" and "don't walk" signals.
- Look left, right, left to be sure road is clear in both directions.
- Look before walking past stopped vehicles.
- Bicycles are considered vehicles unless being walked.
