Biography
Dr. William Gauvin received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts. He is a Professor of Practice in Cybersecurity within the department of Computer Science, college of Engineering at the ßÙßÇÂþ» and employed as a Technical Director within the Symantec Enterprise Division of Broadcom. At Broadcom, he is a member of the Cyber Security Services/Global Government Engineering (CSS/GGE) group where he works as an architect, designing advanced malware detection and analysis tools using machine learning. He has 39 years of experience within industry, specifically in networks and security; having personally been involved in the design and development of 3 firewalls, the AltaVista Firewall, Raptor Firewall and Symantec Gateway Security Firewall/UTM. In addition, he has worked on a number of other security related technologies, such as a version of Norton Antivirus for the Small Mobile Environment / Portable Electronic Device, an advanced version of Data Loss Protection filtering and detection, a secure file reputation system, and Symantec Insight for Malware Researchers (a malware analysis tool). He is highly involved in Cyber Threat Information Sharing (CTIS), for which he acted as a member of the group that defined the protocols and language (STIX/TAXII) used by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to allow government and industries to share cyber threat intelligence. He is also a member of a group that is actively participating in the response to the Execute Order (EO) 14028, to provide recommendations on how to secure the software supply chain. He has been issued 27 patents on security technologies.
Research Interests
His research is focused on malware analysis techniques using machine learning, and Cyber Threat Information Sharing (CTIS) aggregation, replication and autodetection/mitigation.
