USF CSE Alumnus Nitesh Chawla, PhD was named a Fellow of the ACM
Friday, February 10, 2023
Nitesh Chawla, PhD, a USF CSE Alumnus and researcher in the field of machine learning, has been named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for contributions in the study of imbalanced data, graphs, and interdisciplinary innovations.
Imbalanced data refers to situations where the number of examples in one class of a dataset is much greater than the number of examples in other classes. This can make it difficult for machine learning algorithms to accurately classify or predict outcomes. Graph theory is a mathematical study of networks and relationships between objects, represented as vertices (nodes) connected by edges. It is used to model various real-world systems, such as communication networks, social networks, and transportation networks. Dr. Chawla's work has helped to improve the accuracy and performance of these algorithms in these areas.
The ACM Fellowship is a highly prestigious honor, and is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of computing. He is one of only 57 individuals who were named ACM Fellows in 2022, and he joins an elite group of researchers who have been recognized for their outstanding work. Dr. Nitesh Chawla is currently a professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame.
