Dr. Janet K. Outlaw is a three-time graduate of NC State University, where she received
her Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences with a concentration in Literacy
and English Language Arts. She is a former early literacy induction and professional
development leader, elementary teacher, and high school teacher. Dr. Outlaw teaches
literacy methods courses and mentors pre-service teacher literacy action research.
Her areas of expertise include elementary literacy teacher education, novice teacher
induction, dialogic teaching, and early literacy and language arts.
Dr. Outlaw’s scholarship focuses on dialogic early literacy teacher education. Specifically,
her research (a) theorizes digital dialogic comprehension and composition pedagogies
with primary teachers (b) analyzes dialogic literary communities in children’s literature,
and (c) cultivates community-engaged literacy praxis through dialogic action research.
Dr. Outlaw has presented her research at local and national literacy conferences.
Her work has been published in literacy journals, such as Language Arts, Literacy Research: Theory, Method, and Practice, and Literacy Research
and Instruction.
