Janella Newsome has joined the College of Education’s administrative team as Director of Communications and Marketing

Janella Newsome has joined the College of Education’s administrative team as Director of Communications and Marketing. Her first day on the job was October 3, 2022.

In her new role, Janella will oversee the day-to-day operations of the college’s branding and marketing initiatives, as well as build local, regional and national awareness of the amazing accomplishments of our students, staff, and faculty. In particular, she will use her 25 years of professional experiences to help increase enrollment and retention for the college.

Janella joins us from the City of Dallas where she served as the Assistant Director of Communications, Outreach and Marketing. There she managed a team of 20 to meet the daily public relations needs of the mayor’s office, city council and 40 plus departments. Janella also supervised the completion of renovations to the city’s multimedia center with an operating budget of $4M.

Previously, Janella served in a number of managerial roles in communications with the Dallas Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Orleans Saints and higher education, respectively Tulane, Xavier and Dillard Universities. While at the universities, she served dual roles as an adjunct instructor, teaching a number of communication courses and administratively as assistant communications director and news manager. Janella has also worked as a news reporter for a number of television and radio stations in Florida, Louisiana and Texas.

Janella holds an MA in mass communications and journalism from the University of Iowa and a BA in broadcast journalism from Howard University.
