Dr. Connie Walker Sews and Donates Over 200 Face Masks

Connie Walker, PhD

Dr. Connie Walker, a Senior Social & Behavioral Researcher within CFS has sewn over 200 masks and given them away to friends, colleagues, community members, and family in Puerto Rico. She started making them for The Mask Project of Tampa Bay, which was formed so that the sewing community could come together to provide masks for health care workers.

Connie initially donated 50 masks to the Project. After states started recommending people wear masks, Connie realized that many people were going to need masks so she decided to continue making them for friends and friends of friends in Texas and Florida. She even custom embroidered them. She also sent masks to USF colleagues as well as friends and family in Puerto Rico because the lockdown there was very restrictive and they didn't have stores open where they could buy fabric. In addition, she sent fabrics and elastic so others could make additional masks for those in need.

“Making the masks helped to keep me busy during the weekends and free time for many weeks,” said Connie. “It has made my staying at home time more bearable.”

Thank you Connie!
