USF Business Professors' Research Productivity Published in Top Journals Among the Top 100
By Keith Morelli
TAMPA (January 9, 2021) -- Researchers with the USF Muma College of Business continued to rank high on a nationwide survey of scholarly publications in 24 of the nation’s leading business journals. The rankings, compiled and released by the University of Texas-Dallas, included articles published in 2020 and showed USF business professors ranked No. 38 among public universities in the United States.
Overall, Muma College of Business researchers were No. 61 on the list of the top 100 colleges.
“Over the past few years, our faculty have made a concerted effort to focus their research efforts on the very best journals,” said G.J. de Vreede, associate dean of research and professional programs with the Muma College of Business. “As a result, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of publications in the so-called UTD journals – a designated group of the 24 most selective business research journals.”
“Among North American public universities, the Muma College of Business entered the top 100 in 2016 and the top 50 in 2018 in terms of total number of UTD publications,” he said. “In 2020, we reached No. 38 and are the second highest university among all public Florida universities.
“Our number of UTD publications increased 350 percent on average over the last two years compared with the years before.”
The UT Dallas’ Naveen Jindal School of Management compiled the data, logging publications in the top business journals in the nation, creating a database that contains titles and author affiliations of papers published in the top business journals, ranging from accounting to management to marketing, since 1990.
The rankings take into account publications of articles written with one author along with articles authored by several people, including those who work at different universities.
The University of Florida was No.38 overall and No. 22 among public universities. Florida State University was not among the top 100 and Florida International University ranked No. 93 overall and No. 61 among public universities.
USF business researchers in 2020 placed 17 articles in these top-tier publications, de Vreede said, “which is truly remarkable.” In 2019, USF business researchers published 11 and the year before, just four.
To reach a top 25 ranking, researchers must publish 21 or 22 articles a year.
