USF business students receive prestigious scholarships
Tampa, FL (May 15, 2013) — Five USF Muma College of Business undergraduate students will be studying abroad this summer on prestigious scholarships.
Four international business majors – Adely Castaneda, Emily Baillie, Elloni Ellick, and Charles Tyer – received prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to study abroad during the summer. Another international business major, Timothy Gilman, received a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Japan this fall. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 each to apply towards their study abroad program costs; these students are among 700 outstanding American undergraduate students from 270 colleges and universities across the nation who received the Gilman Scholarship, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
Recipients of the scholarship have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies – making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector. Baillie, Ellick, and Castaneda will all be studying abroad in China. Tyer will be traveling to Costa Rica.
Shelby Thomas received a Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship to study at Cardiff, Bangor and Aberystwyth Universities in Wales for six weeks on one of the most prestigious and selective summer scholarship programs operating worldwide, one of just 50 students selected from the United States.
Thomas, also an international business major and a freshman member of the Business Honors Program, received a Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship. She will be studying at Cardiff, Bangor, and Aberystwyth Universities in Wales for six weeks on one of the most prestigious and selective summer scholarship programs operating worldwide as one of just 50 students selected from the United States.
The U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission is the only bilateral, transatlantic scholarship program, offering awards and summer programs for study or research in any field, at any accredited U.S. or U.K. University. Each summer, 50 students are chosen from the U.S., and 50 are chosen from the U.K.
"We firmly believe that international experiences help prepare students to be competitive in a global marketplace," said Jackie Nelson, senior director of undergraduate programs. "Students who explore business and life in other nations tell us the experience is so much more than a rewarding and interesting trip. Many students tell us that study abroad programs are among the highlights of their college careers," Nelson added.
"These experiences provide them with excellent opportunities to examine issues from a global perspective. Students learn about varying business practices, and they begin to understand how cultural differences impact commerce."
In addition, Shaina Maldonado, an Honors College senior majoring in international business, has received the TRIALS Scholarship. She will spend five weeks this summer at Harvard Law School preparing for the LSAT, attending lectures, and enhancing her interpersonal skills.
A partnership of NYU School of Law, Harvard Law School and the Advantage Testing Foundation, TRIALS is a residential scholarship program that helps talented and motivated college students gain admission to the nation's leading law schools. This rigorous five-week summer course enhances opportunities for students of underrepresented backgrounds by bolstering their skills and focusing their goals.
