Dr. John Robison is pleased to announce the publication of two new books by Zhejiang University Press, one of China’s leading academic publishers.
In Zhu Jianer and the Symphony in China, Dr. Robison’s thorough analytical study of Zhu’s 10 symphonies makes a convincing case for emphasizing that Zhu’s symphonies are some of the most significant contributions to the late twentieth-century symphony, ones deserving worldwide recognition.
In China’s International Contribution to Contemporary Music, a book of essays co-edited by Dr. Yu Hui and Dr. Robison, the topics include Chinese intercultural composers as well as modern Western composers influenced by Chinese traditional music. Both books have been published in Chinese and English, ensuring that they will increase worldwide understanding of Chinese and Chinese-influenced composers.
Dr. Jennifer Bugos is the recipient of a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Research Labs Cooperative Agreement ($100,000) to examine Coordination and Cognition Across the Lifespan in Music (CALM). This award will contribute to a series of studies with the mission to evaluate the role of coordination in musical performance on cognition in adults and children.
Dr. Bugos was also selected to be an expert panelist for Renee Fleming 's lecture "Music and the Mind" which was presented prior to her concert with the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Bugos spoke on “The Effects of Music Interventions on Successful Aging."
Victor Fung, Professor of Music Education, spoke virtually on the topic of “Chinese philosophies and music education” at the University of South Dakota, Grand Forks, and at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, Brazil. Both lectures were well-received followed by stimulating discussions with students and faculty.
The National Park Service invited Professor of Jazz Studies, Jack Wilkins, for a residency at in Maine in 2022. His new CD was released in May 2022 on Chronograph Records and will be followed by a concert tour of western Canada over the summer, and a Florida concert tour to be announced at a later date.
