Bio
Dr. Martin is a survey researcher who studies relationships between media use and
behaviors and attitudes, such as support for freedom of expression, reliance on social
media influencers for news, fears of digital surveillance, and others.
Published not only in top journals in communication and journalism, Dr. Martin's multidisciplinary
research also appears in top titles in psychology, political science, computer science,
and other fields. As a journalist, he has reported for outlets like The Washington Post, The Tampa Bay Times, Foreign Policy, and The Atlantic, and for several years wrote a column for Columbia Journalism Review on global media and journalism ethics called "Borders & Bylines."
Dr. Martin's research has attracted $1.9 million in external grants and community
partnerships, which funded , a longitudinal survey of digital media use and sociopolitical attitudes in seven
Arab countries. A Fulbright Scholar, Martin speaks multiple dialects of Arabic. His
Ph.D. is in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
At USF, Dr. Martin is launching the "Life in Media Study," a survey of digital media
use and well-being among 6,000-9,000 11- 13-year-olds, who will be tracked for decades
into middle adulthood. The study is an interdisciplinary initiative, featuring USF
faculty in psychology, public health, journalism, communication, and sociology, and
a researcher from the Poynter Institute.
