James D’Emilio is Associate Professor of Humanities. He is a medievalist and art historian, who has focused on medieval Iberia, Romanesque and Gothic art, and Christianity in western Europe.
As a Marshall scholar, he earned his PhD in art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London) in 1989. He has held grants from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation, Howard Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Society of Architectural Historians, and Graham Foundation. He edited, translated, and contributed to Culture and Society in Medieval Galicia: A Cultural Crossroads at the Edge of Europe (Brill, 2015), with twenty-three international authors. He has published twenty articles on art, architecture, and the church in medieval Galicia and Iberia, as well as thirty book reviews or entries in reference works. He has organized numerous sessions at academic conferences and presented eighty papers and public lectures, mainly on the art and ecclesiastical culture of medieval Spain. He is under contract for a book, Cult, Cathedral, and Pilgrimage: St James at Compostela, in the Routledge Medieval World series.
Dr. D’Emilio teaches courses on ancient and medieval Europe and the Mediterranean, including a survey of ancient and medieval culture, and upper level courses on ancient epics, early Christianity, medieval Italy, and medieval interfaith relations.
