Charles Adams is Professor of English and Dean of the Judy Genshaft Honors College. He joined USF in 2014 from the University of Arkansas where he served as Chair of the Department of English, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, and Senior Director of International Education for the campus. He holds a B.A. degree in English and Philosophy from Tulane University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia. His specialty is Early American Literature with interests in Native American, African American, and World Literatures. He has published three books, “The Guardian of the Law”: Authority and Identity in James Fenimore Cooper (Penn State Press), a critical edition of The Narrative of Robert Adams: A Barbary Captive (Cambridge University Press), and a critical co-translation of Die Regulatoren in Arkansas (1846), a frontier novel by Friedrich Gerstäcker (The Arkansas Regulators, with Christoph Irmscher, published by Berghahn Books). He has also published numerous articles, book chapters, and reviews on various topics in American literature. He has a strong interest in international education, having served as Fulbright Professor of American Studies at the University of Bonn, and directed study abroad programs to Japan, Italy, Belize, South Africa, and Tanzania. He currently serves as President of the Eta of Florida Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at USF.
