Research
Dr. Henry Alegria monitors toxins in the environment. As an environmental chemist, he studies environmental pollutants and their impact on ecosystems and humans. Alegria has conducted such research in places like Mexico, Belize, Turkey, Canada, Kuwait, and the United States.
Recent studies Alegria has carried out have included investigations on exposure to flame retardants in indoor dust in Tampa Bay, as well as the first study on the abundance and distribution of microplastics in Tampa Bay waters, which he co-led with Dr. David Hastings from Eckerd College. Alegria also consults on topics including the sound management of chemicals, air pollution and management of hospital wastes.
Alegria teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in organic chemistry and environmental science. In 2015, he obtained a Fulbright to advise on the design of the environmental management degree at the Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia, during which he lectured on persistent organic pollutants. In 2014, he was awarded a visiting scholar fellowship by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey to carry out research at Bursa Technical Univeristy.
